LAND PLANNING & DESIGN

with a vision for the farm, estate acreage or patio corner.

Some women have a passion for clothes or jewelry. Marilynn Feuerstein has a passion for beautiful weathered woods, old boards with character, and interesting architectural antiques another designer might ignore or discard. She is also passionate about rescuing these unique design elements where ever she finds them. Anyone who knows her well is resigned to the fact that if she spots a lovely old ramshackle building while driving along Creston Road, she's going to stop and inquire about it. If it's available, she's going to take it home, board by board, and find a new and innovative way to incorporate it into her designs.

"Land Planning? Land Designing or Dreaming? Whatever the case, its creating the future." she says, "And, if I can use something beautiful from the past, all the better."

Marilynn did graduate studies for her Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Utah State University. She now plys her craft at home as well as for her clients. Three Creeks is her Design Studio - its grounds and buildings her works in progress. Where another artist might use canvas and brush, Marilynn draws with wood and paints with plants. In Marilynn's capable hands an antique seeder becomes the backdrop for plantings of trailing rosemary and decorative grasses. Turning a wooden water tank into a planter or filling a barrel with color to grace a shaded corner is second nature for this artist. The designs she produces using found objects and natural materials set her work apart from ordinary Landscape Architects. By simply walking from the house to the barn, a careful observer will see her art work in every detail.

"Its more than an arrangement of elements, its how they mature over time. This tiny place near the house, defines the back boundary of the patio just off the kitchen. Butterflies, humingbirds, lizards and other pretty yellow birds are nearly always somewhere here flitting about or sunning themselves. The simple barrier gives an intimate scale to a comfortable area, just large enough to have breakfast outside or sip a favorite beverage watching the sun go down. From the outer yard, old split cedar fence posts define the patio with a diffferent tone and keeping doggies from blasting through the plants."

"What can you do to help me fulfill my landscaping dreams?" We asked Marilynn. "We can help define guidelines for you to develop along or we can assist in making corners of interest that mature, draw attention and calm the moment." she told us. "Land Planning is all about helping the client define their dreams and develop a project to make those dreams come true. Whether the project is purely functional or for aesthetics, we can help from site analysis to the end result, always creating a more pleasing visual experience."  "We care what things look like to others. We want you to be pleased each time you arrive, whether pulling into the driveway or just walking around a corner. We can help things "fit" better with their surroundings and blend a little more into an environment. If someone is planning changes they're going to have to live with those changes. By giving a project just a little more thought, we can make the completed project more attractive - as well as provide the details for making it happen." "As focal points mature, the old seeder (dated 1879) fits right in, with the pine, under the sycamore, and next to the ornamental plum. Its a fence of sorts dividing fun grassy yard from the driveway and parking area on the other. While the larger trees don't change much from day to day, the old wine barrel frequently displays just enough color to draw ones eye closer to the implement."

"Projects need to: serve the purpose; be reasonably obtainable; and look good when finished. So share your dreams, we'll scheme together."

Marilynn's Designs are always in progress at Three Creeks.
Below are some before and after photos at Three Creeks

Before: Looking west from the house - the building destined to become our breeding barn stands stark against a field of untended weeds.

After: Viewing the barn at approximately the same angle today - park like lawns and maturing trees tame the once desolate view.

Before: dated 8-30-97, this photo of what we started with stands in stark contrast to the beauty that is Three Creeks today.

After: Looking east from behind the barn (left), the view in May 2003 hardly appears to reflect the same planet, much less the same building!

Before: The bones of a dream.. Marilynn's vision a barn with aesthetic appeal. More than just a functional space, a place to house a Champion!

In Progress: The dream begins to take shape with a weathered wood facade and plantings to anchor the site.

It's all in the details! Every board has a history. Every surface tells a story.
Come again soon to watch the vision unfold...
